WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 3, 2006)-New opportunities are arising every day for citizens to take on an active role in news reporting. To examine the future of public media and citizen journalism, American University's Center for Social Media will hold a panel discussion with journalism and media experts November 9 on campus in the Abramson Family Recital Hall.

The advent of blogging and free media sites, such as YouTube, provide the general public a greater role than ever before to create and distribute news and information. This discussion, with panelists from the university as well as the Open Society Institute and the Center for Public Integrity, is part of the semi-annual Integrated Media Association conference.

American University's Center for Social Media showcases and analyzes strategies to use media as creative tools for public knowledge and action. It focuses on social documentaries for civil society and democracy, and on the public media environment that supports them. The Center is part of the AU's School of Communication, a laboratory for professional education, communication research and innovative production across the fields of journalism, film and media arts, and public communication.
