We had two great Fair Use events at UFVA's conference [2] in Colorado Springs this year. The Center's Pat Aufderheide and Maura Ugarte presented on the panel Copyright, Fair Use, and Production Teaching: What You Need to Know. Pat discussed the new Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video [3], and Maura presented information on incorporating a Fair Use module in the classroom. The other panelists included Michael Donaldson [4] of Donaldson and Hart, and Peter Decherney [5] from the University of Pennsylvania. Michael discussed how the Statement of Best Practices changed his law practice, and Peter talked not only about how the Digital Millennium Copyright Act affects teaching, but also the exemption [6]for film teachers, which he was instrumental in bringing about.
In addition to the panel, the UFVA Fair Use Working Group had a very productive lunch meeting. We discussed how to better incorporate Fair Use teaching in the classroom, and out of that conversation came an idea for a new Fair Use resource. In the coming months, we will host new video clips and discussions with students on whether Fair Use can be applied and how to make those decisions based on the Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use [7] and the new Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video. We will be sure to keep you informed and archive the discussion so you can take advantage of what we hope will be a very informative and lively exchange.
